Wendy’s | COLCHESTER
THE CLIENT As a well established brand in America with close to 6,000 locations across all states they have gone on to expand into many other countries stretching to all corners of the globe. Their UK arm started from an initial build in Reading, England and has since developed across the UK. The brand has been greeted at these new locations with a warm welcome in the way of long queues out the door and customers waiting 3 hours + just to get their hands on their famous food offering. Although Wendy’s have tailored down the food options to suit the UK tastes they haven’t compromised on delivering what customers want, which is where WHP have been able to step in and ensure the vision is realized.

THE PROJECT A journey to expand across the UK has seen Wendy’s build within new and existing units, both raising their own challenges. The unit in Colchester was a newly built shell unit by the landlord that Wendy’s were to fit out internally and form a Y lane drive thru and external seating area. Wendy’s required expertise in building a drive thru within a short programme time frame, as they were especially keen to open the site (which they did before the rest of the development), we were able to provide a tried and tested service having built 100s of drive thru in all areas of the UK and Europe. Building within a new landlord built unit involved expert negotiations to ensure the handover and level of finish was as expected and as per landlord specification. OUR APPOINTMENT WHP were appointed to provide the role of external quantity surveying and project management on Wendy’s behalf. This involved building the initial project budget, tendering, tender review and recommending contractors to be appointed, monitoring variations throughout the project and negotiating and agreeing the final accounts, communicating with the site and client teams in resolving issues and realising the design teams vision within the programme time frame. Keeping Wendy’s up date to date throughout the project with regular meetings, weekly cost updates and monthly estimate of final costs documents.
THE BENEFIT Our close relationship with a number of brands that have made their way to the UK from the US is testament to the value we can add to a project. By building brand standards, material preferences, suppliers and specifications through to the internal sign off processes we were able to take on the project with a wealth of knowledge behind us and create a seamless programme from the pre contract and survey works through to final accounts and project sign off. We provided reassurance that all aspects of the project were covered and overseen by the team and strong communication at all levels meant information was relayed precisely and in a timely manner that ensured the programme did not run overtime. The final account negotiations were thorough and dealt with respectfully to all parties meaning an agreement was made that all teams were pleased with and within the contract time frame.
